Seeping Stones

Some sedimentary rocks are porous, like a sponge. Tiny particles of sand are held together with rock "cement." Pressure, time, and sediment create this natural type of "cement." Oil and natural gas are formed from decayed plant and animal material inside these formations.

In this lesson, students will learn how oil and gas are formed and they will have the opportunity to observe the characteristics of sedimentary rocks that cause oil and gas to be trapped in these “seeping stones”.

This Lab Time With Leo video demonstrates the activities covered in this lesson.
